Gus is one half (or sometimes two thirds, he likes to claim) in the partnership of the Psych, private detective agency. This isn’t his only job however, and he often spends a lot of time and effort thinking of his career in the pharmaceutical sales industry. Often to the annoyance of his best friend/partner, Shawn Spencer. After over twenty years of friendship, they really wouldn’t know how to do without each other. Shawn, who has been trained to be hyper aware of details, and came up with the idea to perpetuate a ‘psychic’ cover story so that he could solve crimes for the Santa Barbara Police Department, still refuses to do much of anything if he can’t drag Gus into things. Gus seems often to be the source of inexplicably useful information. He gathers hobbies like Shawn gathers police citations. He subscribes to an amateur safecracking magazine, studies history and has an inherited ‘super smeller’ which is basically just a nose that can distinguish almost any smell. He doesn’t seem to see his family as often as Shawn does, despite living in the same city as his parents, Bill and Winnie Guster. Gus also has a brother that lives in Connecticut, that hasn’t been seen on the show as of yet. However, he still get’s incredibly emotional when they’re arrested, showing one of the few scenes of Gus loosing composure and getting upset at Detective Lassiter and O’Hara when they arrest his mother. Gus’s image is one of the things he values the most, and he will often try to portray himself as the rational one, or the more responsible one between him and Shawn. This is really more of a hypocritical image than he even seems to be aware of, because he’ll goof off and join or instigate as many childish antics as Shawn will.
